Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional bowel disorder characterized by discomfort, abdominal pain and alteration of bowel habits the absence of any organic cause.
In some patients, IBS may develop after an infectious illness characterized by two or more of the following: fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or positive stool culture.
Classification of IBS:
- diarrhea-predominant (IBS-D)
- constipation-predominant (IBS-C) or IBS with alternating stool pattern
- pain-predominant (IBS-A).
- post-infectious IBS (IBS-PI).
A pretty high rate (1/5 Americans) suffer of this syndrome, but the good part is that IBS does not cause inflammation or changes in bowel tissue and has nothing to do with cancer.
Managing your diet and lifestyle, along with avoiding stress can be very useful in combating Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

You have to be sure you have been diagnosed correctly with IBS, because there are many reported recently published research that had shown cases of diarrhea misdiagnosed as IBS in some poor patients. Celiac disease (autoimmune disorder of the small intestine) in particular is often misdiagnosed as IBS.
Although no treatment has been found for IBS yet, combating IBS consists in: dieting with lot of fiber, laxatives and stool softeners in constipation-predominant IBS and antidiarrheals for diarrhea-predominant IBS.
Soluble fiber in 20 grams doses per day can reduce overall symptoms but will not reduce pain. Relaxation therapy has also been found to helpful.
As in many illnesses there are multi-herbal extracts products 100% natural and definitely worth trying out. Chinese herbal medicines have shown good results in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
